How to Use Plumber Putty on Bathroom Sinks

Plumbers putty is an easy material to use to stop leaks in your drain. The putty will last for years if it is put on correctly. These steps will tell you how to successfully apply plumbers putty.

Tools and Materials

  • Bathroom Cleaner with Ammonia
  • Putty Knife
  • Plumbers Putty
  • Pipe Wrenches
  • Clean Rag

Step 1: Clean up

Clean the area you will be working on. You will probably need to use the putty knife to scrape any leftover putty or other materials that are there. Spray the bathroom cleaner around the area and let it soak. After a minute wipe it clean with a dry rag.

Step 2: Remove the Strainer

You will need to take out the strainer from the drainpipe. The strainer attaches the drain pipe to the drain in the sink. You can remove it by unscrewing the slip nut connecting them with a pipe wrench. You will need to push the strainer body loose from the sink. Set it aside.

Step 2: Apply the Putty

Take a small, round piece of putty and roll it in your hands until you form a long rope. Lay the rope in the area you removed the strainer from. Make sure to secure the putty in and prepare it for the strainer. Put the strainer back on and tighten the bolts. Fill the sink with water and make sure the leak is fixed. You may need more plumbers putty, but once properly sealed, it will last for a long time.
